Becky
Abbott - Vocals
Personal Background:
Becky spent her early childhood in
Trenton, due to her father’s profession, as a
Royal Canadian Air Force pilot. After a posting to
Ottawa, the Abbott family finally settled
down, allowing Becky to spend the balance her childhood and teenage
years, in one city. Becky would
like to spend more time performing abroad and touring the world.
Becky plans on making singing a life-long career.
Musical Background:
Becky Abbott began singing at the early age of five. Fast forward to today, singing is still her
number one passion. Currently lending her ear to many aspiring vocal
students, Becky has spent the last few years teaching her craft. As
a young pianist, Becky discovered her passion for music at a very
early age, now she uses her vocal talent in many forms; As a back-up
vocalist for Canadian Blues Icon David Gogo,
as a sultry jazz diva, with her own group, "The Becky Abbott Trio"
and when Becky's demanding schedule permits, hitting the stage with Ottawa’s premiere
R&B band, The FunKtion. Becky has been lucky enough to express her love for
music through many genres, from classically singing
Carmina Burana in a massed chorus and Mendelssohn’s, 'A Midsummer night Dream’, with
Christopher Plummer at the National Arts Center, to warming up the
audiences for notable blues acts such as ZZ Top, Johnny Winter and
BB King. Becky is currently working on her debut album.
Musical Influences:
Becky’s main musical influences and inspirations include Ella Fitzgerald, Susan
Tedeschi, Aretha Franklin, Eva Cassidy, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Lang, Nikka Costa,
Jamiroquai, India Arie, Jonathan Brooke, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Janis
Joplin. Becky can identify with all of these musicians. Becky says,
“ day to day, they
are all huge inspirations when it comes time to do some soulful song
writing”.
The Funktion:
Becky was first introduced to the idea of
joining The FunKtion through an ad,
calling for a female vocalist with a strong high-end. The ad caught
her attention right away, and once she found out that the
The FunKtion specialized in Soul, old school R&B and Funk, she didn’t even have to think
twice. After her first rehearsal with The Funktion, she knew that this was the group for her. Years of
searching for that big funky band equipped with a brass section
finally paid off!
